Bergamo, 6 November 2019SIAD has received the 2019 Federchimica Responsible Care Award for the Eco-Friendly Carbon Dioxide project at Rosignano (LI).

The award was presented by the Chairman of Federchimica, Paolo Lamberti, to the General Manager of SIAD, Gian Giacomo Caldara, on the occasion of the presentation of the 25th Annual Responsible Care Report that took place today in Rimini as part of the Ecomondo event, the international exhibition dedicated to sustainable development.

Responsible Care is the voluntary program of the world chemical industry, with which companies, through national chemical federations and associations, undertake to achieve outstanding values and conduct in the areas of safety, health and the environment, in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the planet.

The sustainability project for which SIAD received the Award was conceived with the aim of capturing the CO2 that is released during production processes and reusing it as a useful resource. The system, which was launched in 2018 at Rosignano Solvay, has made it possible to extract and liquefy the carbon dioxide released by the site’s production processes, using special techniques and fluids. The innovation was the introduction of a special absorbent solution that can selectively extract CO2. Thanks to this initiative, up to 5,000 kilos per hour of CO2 emissions are recovered, corresponding to more than 40,000 tons per year. In addition, the reuse of the raw material on-site saves about 1,400,000 kilometers a year in transport (2,000 tanker trucks and 2,000 trips), with a reduction of about one million tons of CO2.

The direct use of carbon dioxide in gaseous form on-site also avoids the liquefaction necessary for transport and subsequent evaporation. An energy saving that results in a further reduction of the equivalent of 7,000 tons of CO2 per year.

25th Yearly Responsible Care Report

The 25th Yearly Responsible Care Report highlighted the improvements made by chemical companies in the three dimensions of sustainability: social, environmental and economical.

The chemical industry is in fact confirmed as a virtuous sector in the safety and health of employees, with a very low number of accidents and occupational diseases compared to the hours worked; is already in line with the EU's climate change targets for 2020 and 2030; it has reduced greenhouse gases by 59% and improved energy efficiency by 55% compared to 1990. In comparison with 30 years ago, emissions into the atmosphere and effluents from water discharges have been drastically reduced by 95% and 77% respectively. The sector is firmly committed to pursuing the circular economy model, preventing as far as possible the production of waste, for which recycling is the first method of disposal (24%), while landfill is used in only 4.5% of cases.
