The new SIAD AF

Having predicted the inevitable banning of asbestos, SIAD began (in its own laboratories at Osio Sopra) in the 1980s to conduct extensive research into alternative, ecologically compatible fibres, so as to develop the optimum “weapon” for its arsenal; a new asbestos-free porous filling mass.

The outstanding results achieved with a very special carbon fibre, developed from rigorously selected raw materials and advanced production technology, permitted SIAD to patent the new ecological mass SIAD AF® in 1992. This new porous filling mass constituted an ecological and quality improvement over the “Silica Sintex 92%” mass and is comprised of synthetic calcium silicates, principally xonotlite, (5CaO. 5SiO2.H2O) accompanied by small quantities of tobermorite (CaO.SiO2. nH2O), obtained via a chemical reaction between calcium oxide and silica under particular temperature and pressure conditions. The result is a monolithic compound which, in addition to high mechanical resistance, has a distinctive capillary structure with pores of less than one micron in diameter which, in turn, produce a very high porosity alveolar structure.

As a binder, in place of the asbestos, SIAD has used a fibre which, although it belongs to the large carbon fibre family, is of a special composition and has properties which have given excellent results.

The preparation of SIAD AF® porous filling mass is achieved by using carefully selected constituents which conform to specifications for the highest purity standards and takes place in a modern plant fitted with control instrumentation which assures the absolute constancy of chemical and physical properties in the finished product.

SIAD AF® porous filling mass conforms to International Standard ISO 3807 which specifies the following tests:

  • POROSITY TEST
  • DROPPING TEST (10 falls from 70 cm height)
  • HIGH TEMPERATURE TEST (at 65°C)
  • INTERNAL IGNITION TEST.


The average properties of SIAD AF® porous filling mass are:

  • DENSITY: 270 g/l
  • POROSITY: 92%
  • COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH: 35 ÷ 45 bar.
